At the risk of being branded a heretic or perhaps just being shown the door by my agency HR director, I have to say it: I hate social media. Why? Because it’s just media. And since when was media ever interesting?

Why I Hate Social Media - Advertising Age - DigitalNext

The other view

Personally I don’t agree with much of this article, but it’s worth a look to see the different view point.  One point he alludes to but fails to address properly is the fact that some people view social media as the complete package - in otherwords they place greater value on participating in Social Media than anything else.  Which, of course, is misguided.

Social Media tools are tools - without the correct message or strategy behind their use, they really are just another form of broadcasting.  But when used successfully they are remarkable at creating a system that engages with people at a level which mere marketing and advertising simply cannot.

The great success of the Obama campaign is not just about the product or the result, but also about how they used social media to connect and coordinate millions of people under a single campaign.  No other political campaign has ever managed to achieve this - and this was done purely by abandoning the “status quo” and developing a new method of political campaigning with social media at it’s core.  Failing to acknowledge that is simply an act of denial.

By June 9, Colby could no longer be transported to a theater and her family feared she would die without having seen the movie. At that point, Orum, who desperately wanted Colby to get her last wish, began to cold-call Pixar and Disney to see if someone could help.

[…] Pixar officials listened to Colby’s story and agreed to send someone to Colby’s house the next day with a DVD of “Up,” Orum recalled.

I also blacked out certain parts of the semester right off the bat — I never scheduled any thing for finals week, for instance. It’s also worth getting social events down on the same calendar.

5 Tips for College Freelancers - FreelanceSwitch - The Freelance Blog

Some good practical advice.  The dates for the final exams have been set - it would be a good idea to block book time around them now to make sure you have time to study.

[…] marketers were raised on the scale of mass—TV, radio, newspapers—they have a churn and burn mentality. The internet turns this upside down. The internet is about who, not how many. The internet lets you take really good care of 100 people instead of harassing 2,000.
